Games & Wagers
Popular formats, optional side games, and the trip betting ledger
Three separate bets: front 9, back 9, and overall 18. Losing side can "press" (start a new bet) when 2-down. Usually $5–$20 per bet. Great for 2v2 or 1v1.
Layer individual skins onto any own-ball format such as Nassau, Wolf, best ball, or stroke play. Choose gross, net, or Canadian net; set all-player or foursome pots; and decide whether ties carry over.
Rotating order — the "wolf" tees off last and picks a partner after seeing each tee shot, or goes "lone wolf" for double stakes. Best ball of partners vs. opponents.
Each hole is worth 1 point. Most holes won wins. Can be 1v1 or 2v2 best ball. Apply strokes on the holes where they fall by handicap. The purest form of golf competition.
2v2 game. At any point during a hole, a team can "throw the hammer" to double the bet. Opponents must pick it up (accept) or lay it down (concede the hole). Gets spicy fast.
2v2 teams. Each team's scores form a 2-digit number (lower digit first). E.g., scores of 4 and 5 = 45. Difference between team numbers is the points. Bogeys can be devastating.
In a foursome, switch 2v2 partners every 6 holes. 3 matches total — everyone plays with and against everyone. Each 6-hole match is a separate Nassau or points bet.
Bingo: First on green. Bango: Closest to pin once all on. Bongo: First in the hole. Great equalizer regardless of handicap.
Greenie: GIR on par 3 + make par. Sandy: Par+ from bunker. Poley: 1-putt. Barky: Hit a tree, still make par. Each dot worth a set amount.
Points: bogey=1, par=2, birdie=4, eagle=8. Your quota is 36 minus your handicap. Beat your quota to win, fall short to lose. The difference is your payout. Self-equalizing.
All players tee off, pick the best shot, all play from there. Repeat until holed. Four-player team HC = 25% of A + 20% of B + 15% of C + 10% of D, low to high. Great for Japan vs USA: Race War WW3.
On every par 3, closest tee shot to the pin wins the pot. Must be on the green to qualify. If nobody hits the green, the pot carries over. Simple and fun.
